• Schedule for 2007:
• Meet Fri. 4:00 p.m. at ???.
• Friday night:  arrive at the hostel before 10:00 p.m.
• Saturday morning:  breakfast at the hostel.  Head out to the climb site by 9 a.m.
• Saturday lunch:  at the climb site with time available to drive to a convenience store.
• Saturday evening:  return to the hostel around 4:30 p.m.  Dinner at the hostel.  Free time after dinner.  Tobogganing is a possible activity.  The Lake Placid Toboggan Chute is a 30-foot tall converted ski jump that launches your toboggan about 1,000 feet out onto the frozen Mirror Lake.
• Sunday morning:  breakfast at the hostel.  Pack all gear and head out to climb site by 9 a.m.
• Sunday lunch:  at the climb site, then head for home.
• Returning Sun. approximately 5:30 p.m.
• Weather conditions may require changes in this schedule.  Indoor climbing in inclement weather.
• Training will precede climbing under a guide's supervision.
• Lodging: High Peaks Hostel on 5956 Sentinel Road, Lake Placid, NY??
• Price includes equipment (ice axes, boots with crampons, helmet, and climbing ropes), some meals, and lodging for up to 8 scouts and 2 adults.
• Bring: Refer to your "Clothing for Winter Hiking" handouts.  Overview: Slippers or moccasins for the hostel, Nalgene bottle of water upside down in a wool sock, optional brown bag Friday supper or eat where the group stops, money for Sunday lunch and supper ($25 cash recommended), rain gear, wind-proof jacket, a day pack, fleece, hand and foot warmers, hot cup labeled with your name, rubber-soled pac boots good to -40 deg. F., hat over the ears, face mask or some other face covering, ski goggles, mittens and gloves both, personal first aid kit, toothbrush, spoon, sunglasses, etc.  No cotton clothing.  More clothing requirements at More information at Council.  Bring sweat pants and sweat shirt to sleep in and a change of clothes.  Optional folding camp stool.  Layers from inside out: underarmor or polypropelene, insulating layer maybe fleece, waterproof pants and top for climbing, and heavily-insulated outer layer.  During climbing, use inexpensive waterproof pants because pants legs may be accidentally cut by the crampons during climbing.
• This activity requires a Class 3 Medical Form completed within the past 12 months.

• Lake Placid has cellular telephone coverage by most major carriers.  However, there is little or no coverage from Exit 26 on the Northway until Lake Placid.  Most ice climbing locations do not have cellular telephone coverage.
• Scouts may do homework and study while traveling to and from Lake Placid and also at the hostel on Saturday night.

• "All members of, or candidates for membership in, the Order of the Arrow who are 21 years of age or older and who are registered members of the Boy Scouts of America shall be considered adult members or candidates for adult membership.  Individuals shall be selected as candidates based on the following:
• Adult leaders in units:  Each year, upon holding a troop or team election for youth candidates that results in at least one youth candidate being elected, the unit committee may nominate one adult to the lodge adult selection committee, composed of the lodge adviser, the chairman of the council committee on which the lodge adviser serves, and the lodge staff adviser.  Troops or teams having more than 50 registered active youth members may nominate an additional adult for every 50 registered, active youth, or fraction thereof.  For example, a troop having 51 to 100 registered, active youths may nominate two adults each year if at least one youth has been elected.  Recommendations of the adult selection committee, with the approval of the Scout executive, serving as Supreme Chief of the Fire, will be candidates for induction, provided the following conditions are fulfilled:
• Selection of the adult is based on the ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and not for recognition of service, including current or prior achievement and positions.
• The individual will be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities that fulfill the purpose of the Order.
• The camping requirements set forth for youth members are fulfilled.
• The adult leader's membership will provide a positive example for the growth and development of the youth members of the lodge."

• "The induction process, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership in the Order.  During the experience, candidates maintain silence, work on camp improvement projects, and sleep apart from other campers.  The candidate is expected to use this time to strengthen his involvement in the unit and encourage Scout camping."

• "After 10 months of service as an Ordeal member and after fulfilling certain requirements, a member may take part in the Brotherhood ceremony, which places further emphasis on the ideals of Scouting and the Order.  Completion of this ceremony signifies full membership in the Order."

• Lodging: At the new Farmhouse and Pearlman Building at the Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation. Cots and mattresses are provided, so bring a sleeping bag and pillow.
• Meals: All meals, including bag lunches to take to the ski area and evening snacks, are provided. Dinner on Friday is on your own, but we shall stop on the way to camp.
• Ski Staff: Qualified and experienced staff is provided for all trips.  If a unit is reserving a weekend adult supervision must be provided.
• Ski Orientation: A get-acquainted ski orientation session will be given to all new skiers who desire it. Professional ski classes are available at an extra charge from the ski area.
• Lift Tickets: Full mountain, all day lift tickets are included in the registration fee.
• Also bring warm jacket, long underwear, gloves, wool hat, sweater or sweatshirts, pajamas, toiletries, towels, extra shirts, pants and socks, boots and sneakers, small duffel bag or day pack, and snow pants or waterproof pants.

• Meet at the Garrison Fish and Game Club, 183 S. Highland Rd., Garrison, NY.  Directions: Oscawana Lake Road to Canopus Hollow Rd. (behind fire house) to Canopus Hollow Rd. to left on South Highland Ave. going up the hill until it turns into a dirt road at the Club.  Alternate directions: north on Taconic, left on Rt. 301 towards Cold Spring, go 3 mi., left on Dennytown Rd, go 2.3 mi., right on S. Highland and look for the lake.
• Fees are due by Feb. 5.
• $15 per person if staying the entire weekend.
• $10 per person if eating Saturday only.
• On arrival check in with The Scoutmaster, who will take money on Saturday.
• Do not bring electronic devices (radios, Gameboys, etc.), except Walkman or radio with headphones.

• DESCRIPTION: This loop hike climbs Anthony's Nose overlooking Bear Mountian and the Bear Mountian Bridge, with many spectacular views over the Hudson River. New York City Day Hike Link

• TIME: About two and a half hours.
• BRING: Day pack, lunch, and water (2 liters).

• TRAIL HEAD: Camp Smith Trail (blue blazes) which can be accessed 1.9 miles north of the old restored 1925 toll house on Bear Mountian Parkway (Route 6 & Route 202) as you drive towards the Bear Mountian Bridge.  Park in the small pull-off parking lot along the bend in the road
