Troop 174

Emergency Preparedness Camporee
Oct. 31 - Nov. 2, 2003

..................

This was the first time that our troop went to this campout, and it was also the first time that the troop camped out during Halloween.  Troop 136 Montauk invited us.  The theme of this campout was emergency preparedness.

Montauk used to be a military base during WWII and was then given to the state, so there are several bunkers, turrets. and abandoned buildings left behind by the military.  There is a picture on this page of the radar dish left by the military.

Friday night people went trick-or-treating (about half did not bother bringing a costume).  Saturday morning a Black Hawk helicopter flew in and landed.  Our troop went to a SWAT team station (the picture with the guns), a firefighter station (the picture with the jaws of life),  a lost boater search, and the Black Hawk presentation. Our troop competed in a chili competition where we did not win even third place because we did not bring the recipie and had no fancy display.  Michel S., Brian C., James H., Roderick K., and Joe P. helped me out with making the chili.  Mr. Long (who does not usually eat beans) ate two bowls of the chili and said that it was very good.
