• Friday night:  arrive at the hostel before 10:00 p.m.
• Saturday morning:  breakfast at the hostel.  Head out to the climb site by 9 a.m.
• Saturday lunch:  at the climb site with time available to drive to a convenience store.
• Saturday evening:  return to the hostel around 4:30 p.m.  Dinner at the hostel.  Free time after dinner.  Tobogganing is a possible activity.  The Lake Placid Toboggan Chute is a 30-foot tall converted ski jump that launches your toboggan about 1,000 feet out onto the frozen Mirror Lake.
• Sunday morning:  breakfast at the hostel.  Pack all gear and head out to climb site by 9 a.m.
• Sunday lunch:  at the climb site, then head for home.
• Returning Sun. approximately 5:30 p.m.
• Weather conditions may require changes in this schedule.  Indoor climbing in inclement weather.
• Training will precede climbing under a guide's supervision.
• Lodging: High Peaks Hostel on 5956 Sentinel Road, Lake Placid, NY.
• Price includes equipment (ice axes, boots with crampons, helmet, and climbing ropes), some meals, and lodging for up to 8 scouts and 2 adults.
• Bring (list revised Jan. 15): Refer to your "Clothing for Winter Hiking" handouts.  Overview: Slippers or moccasins for the hostel, Nalgene bottle of water upside down in a wool sock, optional brown bag Friday supper or eat where the group stops, money for Sunday lunch and supper ($25 cash recommended), rain gear, wind-proof jacket, a day pack, fleece, hand and foot warmers, hot cup labeled with your name, rubber-soled pac boots good to -40 deg. F., hat over the ears, face mask or some other face covering, ski goggles, mittens and gloves both, personal first aid kit, toothbrush, spoon, sunglasses, etc.  No cotton clothing.  More clothing requirements at More information at Council.  Bring sweat pants and sweat shirt to sleep in and a change of clothes.  Optional folding camp stool.  Layers from inside out: underarmor or polypropelene, insulating layer maybe fleece, waterproof pants and top for climbing, and heavily-insulated outer layer.  During climbing, use inexpensive waterproof pants because pants legs may be accidentally cut by the crampons during climbing.
• This activity requires a Class 3 Medical Form completed within the past 12 months.
• Give a signed permission slip for scouts whose parents are not going to Mr. Long by Jan. 15.
• Lake Placid has cellular telephone coverage by most major carriers.  However, there is little or no coverage from Exit 26 on the Northway until Lake Placid.  Most ice climbing locations do not have cellular telephone coverage.
• Scouts may do homework and study while traveling to and from Lake Placid and also at the hostel on Saturday night.

• Patrols, Troops and Districts will be competing in cold weather Search & Rescue and Emergency Preparedness requirements. Judging and demonstrations will be provided by the New York Guard and the Veteran Corps of Artillery.

• All participants will be housed in the barracks at Camp Smith. The barracks have a total of 1200 beds. Camp Smith is currently under renovations. Lavatories in each building are ½ closed. Separate housing for females will be provided. We really need an accurate count of both males and females attending so we can ensure the best housing for everyone. If you haven’t registered yet please make sure to specify this. If you have registered then please contact Council with an update.
• Meals:
• ADULTS please understand that we will be feeding everyone in shifts. Mess halls will be opened by schedules and we will be feeding all adults last. Scouts will be rushed in and out for quick gobbling. By eating last, Adults can relax. Scouts will not have any choices during the meals. We do need to know in advance of any scouts with specific allergies. If we don’t know in advance we will be very limited in what we can do.
• What Type of Event Is This?
• The Klondike will be a competitive event to determine the best patrol by District and the best patrol in the Council. Scouts will be judged in tam work, following instructions, camping skills, communication skills, first aid skills obstacle challenges and basic Scout skills. Adults will be requested to resist the temptation to coach the scouts.
• Security:
• Drivers entering Camp Smith must present a valid drivers license. To prevent long traffic delays please have it out and ready to present at the main gate. Final security requirements will be confirmed at a later date. The Army National Guard currently requires a roster of all people entering the Base prior to the event.
• Who Can Participate?
• All Boy Scout Troops in the Westchester-Putnam Council are welcome to participate. Venture Crews are invited to take part as staff to help with the setup and running of the stations (please).
• What is Camp Smith?
• Camp Smith is an active military installation which is used by the NY National Guard, NY Guard, FBI and local police and fire agencies for training. We are using many areas of this facility, sleeping in the barracks and eating in the mess halls.
• Dr Norm H. has agreed to coordinate the OA volunteers for the First Aid station.
• The Manitoga district is organizing the First Aid station at the council Klondike.
• Dr Norm H. has suggested that we outfit O/A volunteers to represent actual accident victims from a mock Helicopter crash
• We are in need of O/A members come to the Klondike and help out.
• We need volunteers from the O/A to sign up ASAP prior to Dec 31/ 2006.

• "Unit leader approval.  To become eligible for election, a Boy Scout or Varsity Scout must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America and have the approval of his unit leader prior to the election.  The unit leader must certify his Scout spirit (i.e. his adherence to the Scout Oath and Law and active participation in unit activities).  The unit leader must also certify that the nominee meets all specified requirements at the time of this annual election."
• "Youth membership qualifications.  All members of, or candidates for membership in, the Order of the Arrow who are under 21 years of age shall be considered youth members or candidates for youth membership, subject to meeting the following requirements:
• Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America

• After registration with a troop or team, have experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election.  The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America.  The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps."
• "Candidates for youth membership shall be elected by other youth members in accordance with policies set forth by the national Order of the Arrow committee."
• Adult Membership Qualifications
• "All members of, or candidates for membership in, the Order of the Arrow who are 21 years of age or older and who are registered members of the Boy Scouts of America shall be considered adult members or candidates for adult membership.  Individuals shall be selected as candidates based on the following:
• Adult leaders in units:  Each year, upon holding a troop or team election for youth candidates that results in at least one youth candidate being elected, the unit committee may nominate one adult to the lodge adult selection committee, composed of the lodge adviser, the chairman of the council committee on which the lodge adviser serves, and the lodge staff adviser.  Troops or teams having more than 50 registered active youth members may nominate an additional adult for every 50 registered, active youth, or fraction thereof.  For example, a troop having 51 to 100 registered, active youths may nominate two adults each year if at least one youth has been elected.  Recommendations of the adult selection committee, with the approval of the Scout executive, serving as Supreme Chief of the Fire, will be candidates for induction, provided the following conditions are fulfilled:

- Hike in to the Lean-tos at Site #41 (about 1/2 mile) and setup till around 11:00 a.m.
- At 11:00  a.m. older scouts and adults hike out to the Campmaster Cabin to meet Keith, the Ranger.
- Younger scouts stay with Mr. H. to do Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chit
- Work until around 4:00 p.m. (the work will be clearing out Site #9 along with splitting wood)
- At 4:00 p.m. hike back to lean-tos at Site #41 and have dinner and a fire
- Sunday morning up and out to Sperling by 9:00 a.m.

Food:
- People will have to bring bag lunches for Saturday lunch
- Mr. H. will be doing snack with the younger scouts
- The adults will be preparing a Dutch oven stew for about 30 people for Saturday dinner
- Sunday breakfast will be just oatmeal

Fee:
- The camp site will be paid for by the Troop
- The cost of the food will be split amongst the people who eat

• Drop off will be Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church at 8:00 a.m.  Get troop gear.

• Trek
• We shall be trekking in two groups one on the Standard trek of 5.2 miles and another on the Challenge trek of 9 miles.  Click here for trek directions on page 1 and map on page 2.  At the end of the trek, check-in at Site #34.
• All first-year scouts will be doing the Standard trek (the Standard trek pace will be geared toward the First-year scouts).
• First-year scouts will hike with daypacks.  The rest of their gear will be transported to Durland Scout Reservation at Clear Lake by car.
• We need adults to drive the first-year scouts' gear to Durland Scout Reservation at Clear Lake.
• All other scouts have their choice, Standard or Challenge.
• All other scouts will hike in full backpack, presumably following the Troop 174 Backpack Checklist, as explained in Backpacking Equipment Recommendations.
• Each group will stay together on the trail.
• We shall do Patrol cooking.  Three patrols: Scout 5-mile hikers, Scout 9-mile hikers, Adults.
• The Boy Scout Handbook's Cooking chapter (pages 247-283) has a lot of helpful information about patrol cooking.

• A live replica of the original Scout camp will be running on Brownsea Island.  Today's Scouts will discover the lifestyle and activities of the Scouts of 1907 – they will learn how to make huts and find their way by the stars, how to save lives and their duties as citizens.

• Be a registered Boy Scout at least 14 years of age and of First Class rank by July 27, 2007. That is specifically those born between July 28, 1989, and July 27, 1993, may take part in the jamboree.
• Participate in the prejamboree training experience.
• File a Personal Health and Medical form, No. WSJ-34412-05, before prejamboree training.
• Be active in a troop for at least six months prior to July 23, 2007.
• Be approved by the Scoutmaster.
• Be approved by the local council.

• All Boy Scouts of America leadership must meet the requirements listed on the adult application form.
• Councils must first give their approval to applicants.
• Once regions have selected potential leaders, regional jamboree committees and the national office will conduct in-person interviews for final selection.
• How to apply:
• Youth who would like to participate in the world jamboree should complete the World Scout Jamboree Scout application form.  Return it with a check or money order for $500.00 made out to the "Boy Scouts of America" (national office). Your application, which must be approved by your local council, will be sent to the regional and national office for final approval and selection.
• Adults who would like to participate as unit leaders or staff in the World Scout Jamboree must be at least 18 years of age by July 23, 2007 and should complete this adult application form.  Return it with a check or money order for $500.00 made out to the "Boy Scouts of America" (national office). Your application, which must be approved by your local council, will be sent to the regional and national office for final approval and selection.
• Estimated cost is $3,975.00 per person.  The cost includes the jamboree fee established by the Boy Scouts of America, travel and tour cost, all meals, lodging, unit and patrol equipment, accident and sickness insurance, prejamboree weekend training, regional/national office administrative/program support, and buses for ground transportation prior to and after the jamboree. Cost does not include travel to or from the prejamboree training site, travel to and from the gateway city, or ticketing due to early or late departure from the world jamboree site or while on tour due to medical emergencies, family emergencies, and/or problems based on our code of conduct.
• The Northeast Region contingent will depart from their gateway city the evening of Monday, July 23.  On Wednesday morning, August 8, the contingent will depart the jamboree site for home, arriving in the United States on the same day.
• This activity requires a Personal Health and Medical Record, No. WSJ-34412-05, filed before the prejamboree training, completed within the past 12 months.

This notice is for any Scout, Venturer, or Scouter who may be interested in attending the World Jamboree in England during the summer of 2007.

If you are planning on applying to be an adult leader at the World Jamboree, you must do it immediately. The Northeast Region is holding interviews for troop leaders and members of the International Service Team. The interviews wil be held on April 7th (Friday) and 8th (Saturday).  They will be held at the Holiday Inn next to Exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike. Any person who wishes to be a leader or be on the IST team must be interviewed during that weekend.

Please go online and download an application from the World Jamboree site or pick one up at the Westchester-Putnam Council Service Center. Send in the application with your $500.00 deposit to the Service Center at 41 Saw Mill River Road, Hawthorne, NY 10532. The Northeast Region staff will interview for troop leaders, and the National staff will interview for IST staff.

Any scout or Venturer who plans on attending and has not yet made out an application for the World Jamboree should do it in early Spring. The Northeast Region will be reassigning openings in May or June to councils who are waiting for more openings. If we do not fill up our allotment of 12 youth, we shall lose the opportunity. The North East Region has been assigned 16 troops and one Venturing Crew. The opportunity to attend the World Jamboree is still open.        On 1 August 1907, Scouting’s Founder Robert Baden-Powell blew his kudu horn on Brownsea Island at 8:00 a.m. to open the world’s first Scout camp.  Soon thereafter, Scouting began to quickly spread around the world and now exists in 216 countries and territories.
       Today as the sun rises, Scouts and former Scouts worldwide will mark the centenary of Scouting.  They will join together on their nearest high ground and in public places, and as the dawn breaks they will renew their Scout Promise and commit themselves to live by the ideals of Scouting.
       Starting from Kiribati, Kamchatka, Fiji and New Zealand, sweeping westwards round the globe through the World Scout Jamboree and Brownsea Island, and finally reaching Hawaii, Alaska and Western Samoa, the Sunrise Ceremony will circle around the globe.  Shared through the Internet and by satellite, Scouts worldwide will join together in the celebrations with their 28 million brother and sister Scouts in every country as the events happen.
       Brownsea Island, the site of the first experimental Scout camp with twenty boys, will host a Sunrise Camp for two Scouts from every Scouting country, to mark the Sunrise Ceremony. The African kudu horn used by Robert Baden-Powell at 8:00 a.m.will be blown on August 1, 1907 to open his experimental camp will sound again as dawn breaks on Brownsea Island.

        "In recognition of the legacy of Agatha A. Durland, our Scout Reservation in Putnam Valley will be re-named the Agatha A. Durland Scout Reservation.  All Scouters, Scout families, and friends are invited to attend a dedication ceremony at the reservation on November 3, 2007.  The ceremony will take place at the front entrance of the property."
        "The name change is in accordance with the intent of the will of Agatha Durland, who gave the land and endowment fund that built the Durland Scout Center and funded its operation since 1964.  The trust fund has grown since her initial gift and has made possible many of the programs we take for granted in our Council.  Mrs. Durland donated her property in Rye, New York to the Scout Council to be used as a camp for Scouts.  The Council worked with the City of Rye to build an aquatic center on the property.  The Durland Scout Center began its operation in 1964 and since then many different activities have taken place at the Center including unit swimming, merit badge instruction, scuba training programs as well as summer aquatics, sailing and Cub Day Camp."
        "The 2003 Strategic Plan of the Council recommended that the Council sell the facility in Rye in order to better meet the camping and program needs of the Council.  Upon the sale of the Rye property, the Council Executive Board voted to change the name of Clear Lake to the Agatha A. Durland Scout Reservation.  It is fitting and proper that the name of the entire reservation at Clear Lake be changed to honor this woman who has had the greatest impact on our Council of any single person or corporation."

• Sign up here. Troop Swim Night (scouts and adults) by Dec. 17.
• Only Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturers, and BSA-registered adults may swim.
• Fee: Free.
• Turn in a signed permission slip for scouts whose parents are not going.
• All Boy Scouts needing to complete their swimming rank requirements should sign up and attend.  Boy Scouts may complete all Second Class (7a, 7b, 7c) and all First Class (9a, 9b, 9c) swimming rank requirements.  Normally do both.
• Arrive on time at 7:00 p.m. so there will be enough time to complete the requirements.
• Requirement 9b is the BSA swimmer test.
• Although the former 9c (survival skills) is no longer a rank requirement, we offer it, because survival is important.  Bring --
• long pants (100% cotton holds air best, blue jeans OK),
• belt,
• long-sleeved shirt (cotton and no buttons down the front),
• old laced sneakers or laced shoes.
• Practice water lifesaving techniques.
• We shall also have open swim and water games.
• Bring a swimsuit, a towel, water shoes or sandals, and your Boy Scout Handbook for sign-off.
• You may want a plastic bag to bring home wet clothes.
• Men's and women's locker rooms and bathrooms are available.
• No food or drinks are allowed in the pool area.
• If not swimming, wear an activity uniform.
• Scouts may earn service hours.
• Lifeguard will be Adriene D. and ??.
• ???? will teach the programs with help from other Boy Scouts.
• Swim Night will be canceled if the Lakeland Central School District schools are closed, or if driving conditions are hazardous.
