- All scouts should

- Order of the Arrow
members should wear an official uniform
with their OA
sash (not merit badge sash).
- Membership
Requirements from the Order of the Arrow's
"Guide for Officers
and Advisers" and the National Boy Scouts of America's webpage about
the
Order of the Arrow.
- Youth Membership
Requirements
- "Unit leader
approval. To become eligible for
election, a Boy Scout
or Varsity Scout must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America and
have the approval of his unit leader prior to the election.
The
unit
leader must certify his Scout spirit (i.e. his adherence to the Scout
Oath
and Law and active participation in unit activities). The
unit
leader
must also certify that the nominee meets all specified requirements at
the time of this annual election."
- "Question: .
. How is Scout spirit defined and
determined?
Answer:
Scout spirit applies to how a Scout lives and conducts his daily
life.
He shows Scout spirit by being a role model to his peers, living by the
Scout Oath and Law. The concept of Scout spirit is not based
on
how
many Scouting events or outings a Scout attends, but rather by how he
helps
bring out the best in others as a reflection of his own character and
attitude
in his daily life."
- "Youth membership
qualifications. All members of,
or candidates for
membership in, the Order of the Arrow who are under 21 years of age
shall
be considered youth members or candidates for youth membership, subject
to meeting the following requirements:
- Be a registered
member of the Boy Scouts of America
- Hold the First
Class rank of the Boy Scouts of
America, as a minimum.
- After
registration with a troop or team, have
experienced 15 days and nights
of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the
election.
The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one,
long-term
camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident
camping,
approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of
America.
The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other
short-term
camps."
- "Candidates for
youth membership shall be elected by
other youth members
in accordance with policies set forth by the national Order of the
Arrow
committee."
- Adult Membership
Qualifications
- "All members of,
or candidates for membership in, the
Order of the Arrow
who are 21 years of age or older and who are registered members of the
Boy Scouts of America shall be considered adult members or candidates
for
adult membership. Individuals shall be selected as candidates
based
on the following:
- Adult leaders in
units: Each year, upon holding
a troop or team election
for youth candidates that results in at least one youth candidate being
elected, the unit committee may nominate one adult to the lodge adult
selection
committee, composed of the lodge adviser, the chairman of the council
committee
on which the lodge adviser serves, and the lodge staff
adviser.
Troops
or teams having more than 50 registered active youth members may
nominate
an additional adult for every 50 registered, active youth, or fraction
thereof. For example, a troop having 51 to 100 registered,
active
youths may nominate two adults each year if at least one youth has been
elected. Recommendations of the adult selection committee,
with
the
approval of the Scout executive, serving as Supreme Chief of the Fire,
will be candidates for induction, provided the following conditions are
fulfilled:
- Selection of
the adult is based on the ability to
perform the necessary
functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and not for
recognition
of service, including current or prior achievement and positions.
- The individual
will be an asset to the Order
because of demonstrated abilities
that fulfill the purpose of the Order.
- The camping
requirements set forth for youth
members are fulfilled.
- The adult
leader's membership will provide a
positive example for the growth
and development of the youth members of the lodge."
- Induction
- "The induction
process, called the Ordeal, is the first
step toward full
membership in the Order. During the experience, candidates
maintain
silence, work on camp improvement projects, and sleep apart from other
campers. The candidate is expected to use this time to
strengthen
his involvement in the unit and encourage Scout camping."
- Brotherhood
Membership
- "After 10 months
of service as an Ordeal member and
after fulfilling certain
requirements, a member may take part in the Brotherhood ceremony, which
places further emphasis on the ideals of Scouting and the
Order.
Completion of this ceremony signifies full membership in the Order."

scouts
with positive role models and
opportunities for personal growth through cadet/scout interaction,
while at the
same time enhancing West Point’s public
relations and providing cadets with leadership
opportunities. Nearly
200 cadets volunteer to participate in
scouting events over the course of the year and the camporee serves as
the
culminating event.

Bridge. If you are
interested in
volunteering with

- What
to
Pack
- We
will have a challenging (but very doable) hike on Friday afternoon and
Sunday
morning…
- Please
make sure the boys do not over pack (30 lbs at most and
remember to leave room for food and equipment which will be provided by
the
Troop Friday at Grace Lutheran Church)
- The
Troop maintains a comprehensive list if what to bring… http://troop174.info/History/YEveryYear/BackpackChecklist.html
- NO
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT WILL BE PERMITTED! Cell phones to be used in an
emergency
only. West Point does not
allow cell
phone usage in many areas on campus.
- Here
are some suggestions regarding specific items:
- Packs
- Nothing
may be in the Scouts hands or hanging off / swinging on the pack. Everything
must be inside or attached
securely to the pack.
- Leave
room for food and equipment
- Uniform
/
clothes
- The
boys must have a COMPLETE dress uniform (class A) packed neatly in
their pack.
(Shirt, neckerchief, hat, belt, and pants that are either official or
look
/seem official)
- No
jeans, sport (basketball) shorts or military fatigues.
- All
other shirts must be Scout activity shirts (class B) – NO
Motley
Crue, Lucky
brand, etc t-shirts. T-shirts from
camp
Read, Durland (Clear Lake), Troop 174 (prefer) and Bowloree are all
acceptable
activity shirts. Jeans and sports
shorts
are NOT acceptable
- Activity
uniform and hiking boots must be worn on Friday – if your son
wished to bring
his sneakers, please remind him of the hike and to avoid over packing
– it is
his choice.
- Extra
socks are always important. At least 2 pair.
- Please
keep an eye on the weather forecast up until Thursday when you drop off
your
packs – as of now (Tues afternoon) they are forecasting temps
ranging from mid
40’s to mid 60’s. West
Point zip code =
10996
- Water
- The
boys need water only for the initial hike into camp Friday afternoon in
their
water bottle. The campsite will
have
water trucks available throughout the weekend for refill
- Food
- The
boys must bring (or eat at school) lunch for Friday afternoon.
- The
boys must bring their own lunch for Saturday afternoon - high in
calories but
not requiring any heating or significant preparation.
Remember
to keep in mind there is no
refrigeration, do not send them with perishable lunches, e.g., tuna
fish.
- DO
NOT PACK FOOD IN THE PACKS FOR DROP OFF THURSDAY NIGHT, HAVE THE BOYS
BRING THE
LUNCH TO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY.\
- The
boys may bring their own snacks - healthy, high in calories and
protein, but
not sugar --- Snickers bars are not good, granola bars are good, beef
jerky is
good.
- The
troop will be providing food for Friday evening, Saturday breakfast,
Saturday
snack and dinner and Sunday breakfast. Hot
cocoa will be available as well.
- Scouts
will be cooking themselves, but the troop will provide equipment,
including
stoves and fuel (THERE ARE NO OPEN FLAMES AT LAKE FREDERICK).
- Graded Events
(Round-Robin):
- Camouflage
- At this site Scouts will learn how to properly apply US Army
camouflage. They will be graded on their ability to apply what they
have learned to a time standard.
- Litter/First Aid
-
At
this site Scouts will fashion a litter and perform first aid
techniques. Scouts will have to apply what they know to an
“emergency”
situation. They will be graded on proficiency and time.
- Knot Tying
- At
this site Scouts will tie various knots. They will be graded on their
ability to correctly tie the knots.
- Leadership Reaction Course
- At this site Scouts will be given a specific problem to solve using
given materials. The Scouts will be graded by time with time added to
their score for errors (touching minefield).
- Drill
- This site
is
mandatory for every Scout in attendance. The Scouts will
learn
the US
Army drill and ceremonies techniques that they will use for the closing
review.
- Fire Building
-
At
this site the Scouts will have to build a fire to burn a string that is
at a given height. The Scouts will be graded on how fast they are able
to burn through the string and the materials they use to build their
fire.
- Fitness Challenge
-
Fitness being a very important aspect of military life the Scouts will
be graded on the relative fitness of their patrol.
- Grenade Toss
-
Scouts
will be taught various techniques for throwing grenades. After they are
taught they will throw a dummy grenade for accuracy. The most accurate
patrol at different ranges will win.
- Swiss Seat/One-Rope Bridge
- Scouts will be taught how to tie a US
Army rappel
seat and will
be graded on their ability to re-tie the seat in 90 seconds.
They
will
then have the opportunity to cross a One-Rope Bridge using their seat.
- Land Navigation
-
Using very basic Land Navigation Techniques Scouts will negotiate a
Land Nav course for time.
- Commander’s
Challenge
- This event will not be announced until the Camporee. It will be tough
and of a military nature.
- RB-15
- The RB-15
is a US
Army raft. If these are not available due to supply issues, we will use
canoes. The Scouts will have to negotiate a course on the
lake.
The
fastest patrol will win this site.
- Non-Graded Events:
- Static Display
-
The contents of the static display will be United States Military
weapons and accessories.
- Demonstrations
– There will be a variety of cadet club demonstrations for
the
scouts throughout the weekend.
- Other Graded Events:
- Campsite Inspection:
Each troop will be judged on the neatness of their campsite.
We
are a Lightfighter troop and will be graded with the expectation that
every item could have been brought by them over the trail; deductions
will be made for items that could not have been brought in a
scout’s backpack (i.e. folding picnic tables, picnic gazebos,
or
the RV Camper with cable TV parked in the middle of the
patrol’s
site).
The minimum uniform for all scouts throughout the camporee will be a
class B uniform with scout pants and a scout T-shirt or scout polo
shirt.
- The class A uniform will
be required for reveille and retreat
formations, formation on Saturday and all subsequent activities
Saturday evening, for the religious services, and the awards ceremony
on Sunday.
- Gym clothes and shoes
are the uniform for Saturday morning
PT, be prepared to get them dirty and not be able use them for the rest
of the weekend.
- We ask scouts not to
wear elements of a military uniform,
such as physical training pants, while at West Point.
- Absolutely no open
flames are permitted at Lake
Frederick. All cooking needs to be done with camp stoves.
- No locking knives with
blades longer than six inches, or
butterfly knives.

- At Ward Poundridge Reservation in Pound Ridge, NY
- The
4,315-acre park makes Ward Pound Ridge Reservation the county’s
largest park. With its varied terrain and landscapes and miles of
wooded trails, the park provides a variety of activities in all
seasons. Originally part of Cortlandt Manor, the reservation was
settled by farmers from Connecticut. The name Pound Ridge is credited
to the Indians who originally lived in the area. They had a local pound
in which they kept game on the hoof until they needed it for food. The
Indians built an enclosure of saplings driven into the ground
and drove their game into the pound. The name was spelled
“Poundridge” until 1938, when the county bought the
property and added the “Ward” to honor William Lukens Ward,
Westchester’s Republican county leader from 1896 to 1933.
