• Requirement 9b is the BSA swimmer test.
• Although the former 9c (survival skills) is no longer a rank requirement, we offer it, because survival is important.  Bring --
• long pants (100% cotton holds air best, blue jeans OK),

• long-sleeved shirt (cotton and no buttons down the front),
• old laced sneakers or laced shoes.
• Practice water lifesaving techniques.
• We shall also have open swim and water games.
• Bring a swimsuit, a towel, water shoes or sandals, and your Boy Scout Handbook for sign-off.
• You may want a plastic bag to bring home wet clothes.
• Men's and women's locker rooms and bathrooms are available.
• No food or drinks are allowed in the pool area.
• If not swimming, wear an activity uniform.
• Scouts may earn service hours.

• Swim Night will be canceled if the Lakeland Central School District schools are closed, or if driving conditions are hazardous.

• The focus subject this month will be “Winter Camping and Activities” - The Scouting Program is an “Outdoor Program” and just because the weather is not sunny and warm is no reason why the Scouts can’t still enjoy the great outdoors!  We will be discussing ways to still get the Scouts outdoors and to “Be Prepared” when the temperature hovers or dips below the freezing point.  Please bring any ideas and ways you and your Troop have braved the elements and provided some type of outdoor activities for the boys during the winter months.  And as Frank D. always said, “There will be several more acts of comprehsible communication!”

• Subject this month will be “Money and Personal Management” - The Scouting Program is an opportunity for young men to experience and learn the skills which will help them mature into strong wise adults.
• Some skills required to achieve Eagle Scout are money and personal management, starting with managing a food budget for a patrol campout to managing a checking and savings account when they are ready to enter College.
• During these tough financial times, we must teach all our Scouts the value, independence and pride they will feel by paying their own way with money they have earned and saved.

• Adult Membership Qualifications
• "All members of, or candidates for membership in, the Order of the Arrow who are 21 years of age or older and who are registered members of the Boy Scouts of America shall be considered adult members or candidates for adult membership.  Individuals shall be selected as candidates based on the following:
• Adult leaders in units:  Each year, upon holding a troop or team election for youth candidates that results in at least one youth candidate being elected, the unit committee may nominate one adult to the lodge adult selection committee, composed of the lodge adviser, the chairman of the council committee on which the lodge adviser serves, and the lodge staff adviser.  Troops or teams having more than 50 registered active youth members may nominate an additional adult for every 50 registered, active youth, or fraction thereof.  For example, a troop having 51 to 100 registered, active youths may nominate two adults each year if at least one youth has been elected.  Recommendations of the adult selection committee, with the approval of the Scout executive, serving as Supreme Chief of the Fire, will be candidates for induction, provided the following conditions are fulfilled:
• Selection of the adult is based on the ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and not for recognition of service, including current or prior achievement and positions.
• The individual will be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities that fulfill the purpose of the Order.
• The camping requirements set forth for youth members are fulfilled.
• The adult leader's membership will provide a positive example for the growth and development of the youth members of the lodge."

• "The induction process, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership in the Order.  During the experience, candidates maintain silence, work on camp improvement projects, and sleep apart from other campers.  The candidate is expected to use this time to strengthen his involvement in the unit and encourage Scout camping."
• Brotherhood Membership
• "After 10 months of service as an Ordeal member and after fulfilling certain requirements, a member may take part in the Brotherhood ceremony, which places further emphasis on the ideals of Scouting and the Order.  Completion of this ceremony signifies full membership in the Order."

• The Temple has a few boys who are, or were in Troop 174 or 164.
• The Boys will participate in an Oneg Shabbat, “Joy of Sabbath ”.
• An Oneg at RTPV is like a pot luck dinner, where people bring various dishes from home to share, and the Rabbi often speaks about an upcoming holiday or scripture.
• During the Oneg the Rabbi or the boys will discuss a little about the Jewish religion, what it stand for, building relations with other religions, etc.
• All Scouts and Scout Volunteers, please come in uniform.

• Feb. 28 - Mar. 1 (Sa-Su).. Garrison Fish and Game Club Overnighter
• Garrison is a weekend off for the scouts with no special program.. They may goof off, play games, hike, skate if we have ice, whatever.
• This will probably be Troop 174's last opportunity to use the Garrison Fish and Game Club.
• Parents are welcome too, but no siblings.  This is a great chance to relax with other parents in the troop.
• New scouts and new parents (Moms and Dads) are especially welcome.
• Opportunity for new scouts to work on scout skills and advancement with older scouts.
• Opportunity for new adults to hear some good stories about the older members.
• People with peanut allergies should not stay overnight but are welcome to stay for dinner.

Optionally bring sports equipment (football, etc.), ice skates, hockey gear, and ice-fishing gear.  For sleeping bring a sleeping bag, extra socks, flashlight, change of clothes, toothbrush, toothpaste, a pad, a cot or air mattress, as we shall sleep on the floor in a heated building, and consider ear plugs etc.

• Step 1: Go into your attic, basement or garage and dig out your under used but functional and clean camping equipment (sleeping bags, backpacks, boots, knives, cooking kits, flash lights, etc.).
• Step 2: Bring the equipment to a troop meeting before April 13th and donate the underused equipment to the troop (tax receipts available upon request).
• Step 3: The Troop will place a nominal value on each piece of donated equipment ($1, $2, $5 or $10 dollars).  All proceeds will be used to buy new Troop camping equipment (tents, tarps, stoves, etc.).

• Ski Staff: Qualified and experienced staff is provided for all trips.  If a unit is reserving a weekend adult supervision must be provided.
• Ski Orientation: A get-acquainted ski orientation session will be given to all new skiers who desire it. Professional ski classes are available at an extra charge from the ski area.
• Lift Tickets: Full mountain, all day lift tickets are included in the registration fee.

• On Sat April 25th, 2009 at 9 AM we will hike12 miles, starting on the NY side of the George Washington Bridge and Ending at Camp Alpine off the Palisades Parkway (you know where it is, you remember seeing the signs).
• MEET: At 7:00am at the Grace Lutheran Church Parking lot.
• We need parents to drive to Manhattan and help drop scouts off at 177th Street. Drop off location will be at the corner of 177th street and Cabrini.  We will share rides to Manhattan if possible.
• Some of the parents dropping scouts off will be asked to drop off equipment at Camp Alpine .
• HIKE: We will be hiking across the George Washington Bridge the Scouts will continue North up the Palisades Trail (the one that runs along the top) till they reach Alpine Scout Camp where we will camp overnight.
• OVERNIGHT: We will be sleeping in troop tents at Camp Alpine in Alpine, NJ (across the Hudson River from Yonkers, NY)
• PICKUP: At Camp Alpine Sunday 8:30am, adult leaders will be leaving at 9:00am.

• DESCRIPTION: The hike begins on west side of the road where you will find the Breakneck Ridge Trail (white blazes). This first section of the hike involves 1.5 miles of sometimes difficult climbing and rock scrambling until you reach a 1200 foot crest. . New York City Day Hike Link

• DIFFICULTY: medium (multiple rock scrambles)

• TRAIL HEAD: Traveling northbound on Route 9D north of Cold Spring, pass through the tunnel that goes through Breakneck Ridge and immediately pull off on the side of the road. The trail entrance is on the "river side" of Route 9D, right next to the tunnel entrance. It is marked by three white diamond-shaped reflectors nailed to a tree.

  • The Order of the Arrow's Section NE-7B Conclave, for OA members, will be held on June 12-14, 2009 at Camp Tri-Mount Scout Reservation in East Jewett, NY in the Catskills. This is the first Section Conclave for the newly formed Section NE-7B. Ktemaque Lodge's Jess Hurwitz is the Section NE-7B Adviser. The Section NE-7B Conclave is an annual gathering of members from the seven lodges in the New York City to Kingston region. There will be games, fun activities, training sessions, and evening programs. All Ktemaque Lodge members should try to come. New Ordeal members and new Brotherhood members are especially encouraged to attend.
  • We are very fortunate to have the honor of the National Chief Jack O'Neill and the National Vice Chief Dan Higham attend our Section Conclave as guests. This is a great opportunity to meet and speak with these national youth officers.

  • There were some serious exposures to Poison Ivy affecting both adult and youth volunteers on June 20th but much of it has been cleared.
  • The site will be inspected for any hazard before work commences. 
  • As a precaution, all clothing including your shoes should be considered contaminated when you leave the worksite and washed separately or discarded if disposeable.

• At Ward Poundridge Reservation in Pound Ridge, NY
• The 4,315-acre park makes Ward Pound Ridge Reservation the county’s largest park. With its varied terrain and landscapes and miles of wooded trails, the park provides a variety of activities in all seasons. Originally part of Cortlandt Manor, the reservation was settled by farmers from Connecticut. The name Pound Ridge is credited to the Indians who originally lived in the area. They had a local pound in which they kept game on the hoof until they needed it for food. The Indians built an enclosure of saplings driven into the ground and drove their game into the pound. The name was spelled “Poundridge” until 1938, when the county bought the property and added the “Ward” to honor William Lukens Ward, Westchester’s Republican county leader from 1896 to 1933.

• WHERE: Hike to Fort Montomery near Bear Mountain State Park.

• DESCRIPTION: Fort Montgomery is the name of a fortification built on the Hudson River during the American Revolution. It was one of the first major investments by the Americans in strategic construction projects. It is a National Historic Landmark and is owned and operated by the state of New York as Fort Montgomery State Historic Site.  We will start south of the Bear Mountian Inn hike along the 1777 Trail used by 2,100 British, Loyalist and Hessian troops on Oct. 6, 1777 as they stormed Forts Clinton and Montgomery.  We will stop at a Museum honoring early Boy Scout Leaders and after hiking under the Bear Mountian bridge end up at the Fort Montgomery fort and museum.

• Deadline for adults to pay $16 registration fee to remain a Troop 174 Sustaining member, or if you wish pay $25 to be a recognized as a Troop 174 Sponsor, or if you wish pay $50 to be recognized as a Troop 174 Benefactor.  It is expected that at least one adult from every family register as a sustaining member.  Give check payable to "BSA Troop 174" to the Troop Treasurer, Mr. Bruce. Contact Mr. Bruce or Mr. Davies if you have questions.

• Ship 30 Sea Scouts and Pack 45 Webelos are invited, must sign up prior to event to determine number of life guards.

• All Boy Scouts needing to complete their swimming rank requirements should sign up and attend.  Boy Scouts may complete all Second Class (7a, 7b, 7c) and all First Class (9a, 9b, 9c) swimming rank requirements.  Normally do both.
• Arrive on time at 7:00 p.m. so there will be enough time to complete the requirements.
• Requirement 9b is the BSA swimmer test.
• We shall also have open swim and water games.
• Bring a swimsuit, a towel, water shoes or sandals, and your Boy Scout Handbook for sign-off.
• You may want a plastic bag to bring home wet clothes.
• Men's and women's locker rooms and bathrooms are available.
• No food or drinks are allowed in the pool area.
• If not swimming, wear an activity uniform.
• Lifeguard will be Mrs. Adrienne Davies and Josh D. Jr.  American Red Cross life saving certified.
• Swim Night will be canceled if the Lakeland Central School District schools are closed, or if driving conditions are hazardous.
