Troop 174

Totem Pole Carving
July 2001 - ....

Overview

Scouts, fathers, mothers, and daughters may sign up to hammer and carve or hang out at the Troop 174 totem pole carving at the Hawk and Raven headquarters at patrol meetings. The completed poles will be placed at the entrance to Clear Lake Scout Reservation.  Clear Lake wants the totems, so let's carve them.

When you are not carving, you are entertaining yourself in camp with nature, games, books, talk, crafts, etc.  You may bring food and drink for your stay: 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, whatever, on one or more days.  There is room on the poles for several people to work at once.  There will be heat for the winter.

Clear Lake has provided two oak logs, which we are carving into the poles pictured above.  Oak is tough, so parents are very welcome.  The logs are under tarps, so carving will go on rain or shine:

The first time call Dale S. to come over and work.  He may not be available some of the time, but call and he will work it out.  Leave a clear message on Dale S.'s answering machine with your phone number and the date and time you want to come, and he will confirm with you.

Then, after 10-minute training you can come back on your own, even weekends and nights.  Adults must be present.

Bring work gloves.  If you have flat chisels and mallets and can be responsible for them, you can bring them.

The poles are at The Cabin.
