HELPFUL HINTS FOR SKIERS AND SNOWBOARDERS

CLOTHING:  Wearing the proper clothing is very important to the enjoyment of skiing.  Feeling cold is not fun.  Expensive skiwear is not necessary.  Wearing layers of clothes is better than bulky clothes.  We advise wearing a warm hat and waterproof insulated gloves.  It’s a good idea to bring an extra pair of gloves in case the first pair gets wet.  Often gloves become wet from the inside due to perspiration from hands.  Blue jeans are not a good idea.  Water-resistant pants that fit over the tops of the boots will keep your legs warm and snow from getting into the boot.

SOCKS:  One pair of medium weight over the calf socks are the only thing that should go into your ski boots, other than your foot.  Wearing too many pair of bulky socks will cut off the circulation in your toes causing cold feet.

EQUIPMENT NUMBERS:  All rental skis and snowboards have numbers written at the tip and between the bindings.  Remember the number so you can be sure to pick up the correct skis.  There are many Shawnee skis out there.  Snowboards are not to be left on ski racks at any time unless they are locked.  Bring snowboards to Ski Check any time you need to go into the lodge.  SKI CHECK IS FREE FOR RENTALS.

Do not take rental equipment off Shawnee property.  When your group is ready to leave for the evening, bring your skis to ski check.  They will be stored free of charge.  Be sure to bring the claim stub the next day to reclaim your skis.  Always keep your rental receipt with you.  If at any time you have a problem with your skis, boots, or bindings bring the equipment and your rental receipt to the rental shop to solve the problem.

LOCKERS:  Lockers are located in the rental shop midway between boots and skis.  Lockers are also located in the changing rooms and through out the lodges.  They are $0.50 per entry.  You may also use ski check.  There is a small charge for storing personal items during the day.

INJURY PROCEDURES

The following guidelines are presented to help you as a group leader to better handle an injury to one of your group members.  These are just suggestions.

The Ski Patrol Building is located in the base areas between Arrowhead and Tomahawk trails and is well marked.

If at all possible, each group should make plans to bring an extra vehicle and designate a responsible person to transport an injured skier home or to the hospital if necessary.  Should an ambulance be needed, a person from the group should ride with them for reassurance.  The Ski Patrol will make every effort to contact the group leaders before calling an ambulance.  The Ski Patrol will also make every effort to notify a legal guardian or parent before sending someone to the hospital.  Note:  If a patroller feels the injury demands immediate care, he will contact the appropriate ALS (Advanced Life Support) organizations first, and then try to contact parents and group leaders.  The hospital we refer all injuries to is Pocono Medical Center, located in East Stroudsburg, just eight minutes from Shawnee Mountain.  The hospital will treat minors with verbal permission over the phone from a parent.  They will treat any life-threatening emergency without authorization.  Patrollers only call an ambulance if necessary, but occasionally after an injured person is treated, it is found that an ambulance was not needed.  This does not necessarily reflect a patroller’s hasty judgment – the skier’s best interest is always in mind.

When a person is injured we always ask if they are with a group.  We then notify Skier Services or send a friend of the injured to get a group leader to report to the patrol room.  Since our PA system is not heard everywhere, it would be good practice for group leaders to stop at the patrol room or Skier Services periodically to see if they have an injured party from their group.

Obviously as group leaders, you want to reduce the risk of injury for your group.  It is important that everyone be aware of and follows “YOUR CODE”.  Educating you group skiers as to their responsibilities as a skier will go a long way in reducing the element of risk.

It should be noted Shawnee Mountain reserves the right to revoke skiing privileges for any skier or group who continually breaks the rules of “YOUR CODE”.
